What well pump work costs
Nobody can price a well pump job over the phone with real accuracy, because the deciding factors are down the hole: how deep the pump hangs, what shape the pipe and wire are in, and whether the tank and controls also need work. What is possible is a sense of the published national ranges, plus the fees local agencies actually charge. The contractor who takes your call sets the real price after seeing the well.
Published national ranges for 2026
| Job | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Well pump replacement, overall | $900 to $2,500 | This Old House, updated March 2026 |
| Submersible pump, installed | $1,000 to $2,500 | HomeGuide figures cited by American Home Shield, Feb 2026 |
| Shallow-well jet pump, installed | $400 to $1,400 | Same |
| Deep-well jet pump, installed | $500 to $1,400 | Same |
| Constant-pressure system | $2,000 to $5,000 | Same |
| Small repairs | From about $70 | American Home Shield homeowner survey |
For the hardware alone, This Old House's survey of retail units found shallow jet pumps around $200, deep-well jets around $300 and submersibles around $500. The rest of a typical bill is labor, pipe, wire, fittings and the time it takes to pull and reset the pump.
What pushes a Wichita-area quote up or down
- Setting depth. More pipe and wire to pull and replace, and a bigger motor to lift the water.
- Access. A well cap buried in a flowerbed, behind a fence or under a deck takes longer to reach with a hoist.
- Extras found on the way. A waterlogged pressure tank, a burnt switch, cracked pipe or a missing sanitary cap.
- Sand and minerals. A well that has been pumping sand may need the pump set higher or other work before a new pump will last.
- After-hours calls. Ask about weekend or evening rates before agreeing to them.
Local fees that are actually published
| Item | Fee | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| New well permit, Sedgwick County | $50 | MABCD |
| New well permit inside Wichita | $150, inspection included | City of Wichita Environmental Health |
| Well inspection before selling a Wichita home | $125, plus water tests and rechecks | City of Wichita Environmental Health |
| Pump replacement permit, county | None required | MABCD |
A pump swap does not add permit costs in the county, but the code does require the well to be chlorinated afterwards, and a follow-up bacteria test is sensible. Ask whether both are included in the quote. New wells are a different budget entirely; see new wells.
Getting a quote you can compare
- Ask for the price in writing before work starts, broken out into pump, motor, pipe, wire, controls, tank and labor.
- Ask what happens to the price if the problem turns out to be something else once the pump is up.
- Confirm the warranty on parts and on labor.
- Ask whether the contractor holds a KDHE water well contractor license, and whether they are registered with MABCD or the City of Wichita if casing work might be needed.

Questions people ask
- Why do published price ranges differ so much?
- Some cover the pump alone and others include installation, pipe, wire and controls. Deep settings and extra parts push a job toward the top of any range.
- Is repair cheaper than replacement?
- Often, when the fault is above ground: a switch, capacitor, relay or tank. Once a submersible has to come out of the well, labor makes up much of the bill and replacing an old pump can be the better value.
- Do you set the prices?
- No. This is a referral service. The independent contractor who takes your call quotes the job and sets the price.
Describe what the well is doing
This is a referral line for private well owners, not a pump company. Your call or note goes to an independent well and pump contractor in the Wichita area, who sets the price and does the work. House completely out of water? Turn the pump breaker off so the motor isn't running dry, then call.
